What is education?

A form of learning which the knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits of a group go people are transferred from one generation to the next through story telling, discussion, teaching, training and or research.

What is true education?

Our ideas of education take too narrow and too low a range. There is need of a broader scope, a higher aim. True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come. – Education 13.1

Object of education

The true of object of education is to restore the image of God in the soul.

Eden Model School

The system of education instituted at the beginning of the world was to be a model for human beings throughout all time. As an illustration of its principles a model school was established in Eden. The Garden was the schoolroom, nature was the lesson book, the Creator Himself was the instructor, and the parents of the human family were the students. – Education 12.1

  • God spoke face-to-face with Adam and Eve; we should not delegate teaching of our children
  • True education is based on faith
  • False education is based mainly on reason and promises you glory, self-exaltation and supremacy

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” – Genesis 3:6

Who teaches like God

Pslam 98:8-111

SESSION 02: THE BIBLICAL MODEL FOR EDUCATION

The rich young ruler

  • He was very sad because he had great wealth.
  • Wealth can lead someone away from God

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. – Luke 18:18-25

The education of Abraham

  • Abraham was disconnected from the heathen
  • This education prepares you to making money in the city
  • Lot’s wife was lost because Lot lingered in the city

It was a wise arrangement, which God Himself had made, to cut off His people, so far as possible, from connection with the heathen, making them a people dwelling alone, and not reckoned among the nations. He had separated Abraham from his idolatrous kindred, that the patriarch might train and educate his family apart from the seductive influences which would have surrounded them in Mesopotamia, and that the true faith might be preserved in its purity by his descendants from generation to generation.  – Patriarchs and Prophets 141.3

  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Values
  • Beliefs

  • Lot had permitted his children to mingle with the inhabitants of Sodom
  • Labour not to be rich Proverbs 23:4
  • Marriage with the Sodomites was inevitable
  • The choice of a home is crucial Patriarchs and Prophets 168.4
  • The atmosphere lax morality counteracts the influence of parents. Patriarchs and Prophets 169.1
  • We should not needlessly expose ourselves to a sinful environment. Patriarchs and Prophets 169.2
  • Our children might be prosperous in the city but this will be a terrible loss.
  • Education in the secular schools is an influence of death.
  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. – Proverbs 1:7
  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. – Proverbs 9:10

SESSION 03: WHAT ABOUT HIGHER EDUCATION?

  • You remember things better by reading hard-copy
  • The brain’s memory is diminished through the use of the computer
  • The brain stores information in pictures
  • You must study for yourselves
  • You cannot survive by watching videos; you must study for yourself

What is higher education

  • Eternal interests are overlooked in the eager desire for temporal advantage. CT 49.1
  • The education of this world is temporal. It may smoothen your life but leads to eternal loss

The purpose of education

To bring man into harmony with God

What is true education?

True education is missionary training. Every son and daughter of God is called to be a missionary; we are called to the service of God and our fellow men; and to fit us for the service should be the object of our education. – Ministry of Healing, 395.1

The LORD created the world, disapproving evolution

6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

– Psalm 33:6,9

The danger in universities

He wrote thus of the universities: “I am much afraid that the universities will prove to be the great gates of hell, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, and engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not unceasingly occupied with the word of God must become corrupt.”Ibid., b. 6, ch. 3. – The Great Controversy 140.5

Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom

23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. – Jeremiah 9:23,24

Prepare the filed first, and then build your house

  • Get out of the city
  • Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house. – Proverbs 24:27
